For the Clemmons Courier
The spring sports teams at West Forsyth just finished a very successful overall season, and the school just had graduation this past Friday. Here is a look back at what happened in the past three months for the teams that competed this spring.
Baseball
The West Forsyth baseball team finished 23-5 overall and won the Central Piedmont 4-A with a record of 14-0 under Coach Kevin McIntosh.
After going undefeated in regular-season conference play, West Forsyth lost to Davie County 3-2 in the conference semifinals. However, as the team won the regular-season title, it was awarded the top seed from the conference in the NCHSAA Class 4-A playoffs.
West Forsyth defeated Charlotte’s Ardrey Kell 4-3 in 10 innings in the first round and followed it by defeating Reagan 5-4 in the second round. It was the third win of the season against Reagan after a regular-season sweep.
In the third round of the playoffs West Forsyth slipped past South Iredell 2-1 in Clemmons. However, three nights later in Waxhaw, top-seeded Cuthbertson knocked off West Forsyth 7-6 in the quarterfinals ending the season.
Softball
Baseball wasn’t the only team at West Forsyth that won the Central Piedmont 4-A championship. Softball, led by Coach Kevin Baity, finished 26-3 overall and 14-0 in the conference.
West Forsyth was the top seed for the conference tournament and played Reynolds in the first round. After defeating Reynolds 15-0 in the opening round, West Forsyth defeated East Forsyth 8-2 in the semifinals. West Forsyth advanced to the conference-tournament championship against Reagan, but it lost 4-3.
Despite the loss to Reagan in the conference-tournament championship, West Forsyth went into the state tournament as the top seed from the conference.
In the first round of the state tournament, West Forsyth rolled past Southwest Guilford 7-1, and just three nights later, the team edged South Iredell 10-7 in the second round. The following Tuesday night, West Forsyth routed Northern Guilford 8-0 in the third round, but it lost to South Caldwell 5-2 three nights later in the quarterfinals, ending its season.
Girls soccer
The West Forsyth girls soccer team also won the Central Piedmont 4-A championship. The team was 12-0 in the conference and outscored its opponents 69-3. The three goals given up came in the 11th and 12th conference games, with two in an overtime game against East Forsyth and one in an 8-1 win against Reagan.
After going 12-0 in the conference West Forsyth had one week and two games to try and finish the regular season undefeated in the conference. However, East Forsyth edged West Forsyth 3-2 to go to 12-1. It rebounded two nights later, defeating Mount Tabor 2-0 to finish the regular season 13-1.
As the top seed from the conference West Forsyth opened the NCHSAA Class 4-A playoffs with a 2-0 win against Southwest Guilford. However, three nights later in the second round, Ardrey Kell defeated West Forsyth 2-1, ending West Forsyth’s season at 16-5-1.
Leigha Curry was the leading scorer for the Titans with 12 goals. Ella Fergus and Aislynn Maguire, who has signed to play at Wake Forest, added 11 goals apiece. Allie Ramseur scored 10 goals.
Girls lacrosse
The West Forsyth girls lacrosse team, led by Coach Doug Brawley, added to the number of Central Piedmont 4-A regular-season championships the school collected this past spring.
The Titans finished 21-6 overall and finished 12-0 in the conference, which gave them the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament as well as getting the No. 1 seed for the conference in the NCHSAA Class 4-A tournament.
Because Parkland doesn’t have a girls lacrosse team, leaving only seven lacrosse-playing schools in the conference, West Forsyth received a first-round bye.
In the semifinals, West Forsyth routed Davie County 21-8, and two days later, West Forsyth pummeled Reagan 21-7.
West Forsyth received a first-round bye in the state tournament and played Greensboro’s Grimsley in the second round. West Forsyth cruised past Grimsley 20-8, which set up a third-round game against Lake Norman the following Tuesday in Clemmons. Lake Norman had defeated West Forsyth earlier in the season, but West Forsyth couldn’t avenge the loss, losing 21-9 in the third round of the playoffs to end the season.
Sophomore Tatum Snow led the Titans with 99 goals and added 45 assists. Junior Gabby Vestal added 79 goals and 45 assists. Senior Kayleigh Mutkus chipped in with 54 goals and junior Brigdhe Mullen added 44.
Boys lacrosse
What a difference a year made.
After finishing 0-16 last year, the West Forsyth boys lacrosse bounced back this past season and finished 12-10 overall with Coach Jacob Able.
West Forsyth was the fourth seed in the Central Piedmont 4-A tournament and played fifth-seeded Mount Tabor in the first round in Clemmons. West Forsyth defeated Mount Tabor 15-4 and advanced to play top-seeded Reynolds in the semifinals. Reynolds defeated West Forsyth 18-3.
Despite the loss in the conference tournament West Forsyth reached the NCHSAA Class 4-A tournament and played host to Charlotte’s Providence in the first round. Providence won 11-8 to end West Forsyth’s season.
Boys tennis
Not to be outdone, the West Forsyth boys tennis team, led by Coach Sara Cranford, also won the Central Piedmont 4-A championship after finishing 13-3 overall and 11-1 in the conference.
The only conference loss West Forsyth had was 5-4 against Reynolds on April 9. However, earlier in the season on March 17, West Forsyth defeated Reynolds 5-4.
The conference tournament was played at Hanes Park. Senior Sean Cooper of West Forsyth defeated Bradyn Neal of Reagan 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the singles championship.
Shortly thereafter, West Forsyth played in the state tournament as the conference’s top seed, but it fell against Charlotte’s Myers Park 6-0 in the first round in Clemmons.
Boys golf
The championships continued to pile up for West Forsyth, including boys golf, led by Coach Debra Troxell.
West Forsyth won its first boys team championship at Maple Chase in the Central Piedmont 4-A since 2012.
At the conference championship, Connor Williams won the individual championship at 1-under. Aiden Koontz said he finished 1-over and tied for third.
In the state championship, which finished after 27 holes because of rain at Pinehurst No. 8, sophomore Kevin Zhang had the best finish for West Forsyth in 23rd after shooting 110, 10 shots behind winner Will Hartman of Charlotte Catholic. Williams finished 44th after shooting 115.
West Forsyth finished in 12th after shooting 477, 61 shots behind winner Southern Pines’ Pinecrest, which shot 416.
Boys and girls track and field
Freshman Laila Jones led West Forsyth in the recently held NCHSAA Class 4-A track-and-field championships at N.C. A&T in Greensboro.
The Titans were coached by Sean Joyce, who took over after Newsome retired during the indoor track-and-field season.
Jones threw the discus at 148-feet, 1 inch, just behind Mint Hill’s Rocky River’s Alexandria Jefferson, who threw 149-7.
In the shot put, Jones threw it 40.25 feet. Natalie Brown of Weddington won at 47-3.75.
Senior Noelle Childs of West Forsyth finished fourth in the girls pole vault at 10-6. Isabella Leonard of Raleigh’s Cardinal Gibbons won at 12-9.
The West Forsyth girls finished tied for 15th in the state championship with 18 points, 36 behind champion Cardinal Gibbons.
Boys indoor volleyball
Boys volleyball isn’t sanctioned by the NCHSAA, but West Forsyth, led by Coach Patrick Shugart, had a dominant season and won the N.C. Boys High School Volleyball Association Class 4-A state championship at Queens University of Charlotte.
It capped off a dominant season in which West Forsyth finished 25-1 and 12-0 in the conference.
The only loss came on April 12 after Weddington toppled West Forsyth 25-22, 25-22.
In the NCBVA playoffs, West Forsyth defeated Cary’s Panther Creek 25-12, 25-13, 25-11 in the first round. In the second round, West Forsyth cruised past Riverside-Durham 25-18, 27-25, 25-14.
In the semifinals at Queens University of Charlotte, West Forsyth lost the first set 25-23 against Chapel Hill, but it rebounded to win the next three sets 25-23, 25-21, 25-17 to come from behind to win 3-1. Later that afternoon, West Forsyth played Cornelius’s Hough for the state championship. Once again, West Forsyth lost the first set 25-21, but came back to win after winning the next three sets 25-22, 25-21, 25-18.
Shugart’s son, Liam, was named the MVP in the state championship
Girls and boys sand volleyball
The West Forsyth girls sand volleyball team, coached by Lauren Gillon defeated Reagan 2-1 in the N.C. High School Sand Volleyball Association state championship at Southern Sand Volleyball in Apex.
Sophomores Hadley Lichty and Aurora Rosa form the No. 1-seeded team and finished as runners-up in the individual pairs competition the night before the team championship to the team from Topsail. The No. 2-team was sophomore Ella Lamoureux and junior Anna Hege, and the No. 3 team was senior Chloe Randell and Avalon Rayne.
In the best-of-three pairs championship, Lichty and Rosa quickly gave West Forsyth a 1-0 lead. However, Reagan knotted the match at 1-1 after Lamoureux and Hege of West Forsyth lost. West Forsyth clinched the match and the state championship after Rayne and Randell won.
In addition, Lichty and Rosa finished runners-up in the girls pairs competition the night before the team championship. The Titans also had a boys team with Liam Shugart and Jackson Arnaez, which also finished runners-up.
