Waterford pool in Clemmons has been busy this summer with 140 swimmers working hard learning strokes and competing in swim meets against other area neighborhood pools.
During the third week of the season, the team took a night off to attend the summer swim team event at the DASH, where their very own coach Colby Groce threw the first pitch.
On Friday, June 20, Bolton pool was the place to be where swimmers from the entire region convened to battle it out at the Greater Winston-Salem Swimming Championships, also known as Robin Jacobs City Meet.
Every year since the 1970s, neighborhood pools and swim clubs compete for top honors in individual and team events, as well as spirit contests. The theme for this year’s spirit competition was the movie “Cars.”
The Waterford Stingrays represented Clemmons well by bringing home second place in the Large team division for the third year in a row.
Waterford also broke more city meet records, which is especially significant as some records are still held by former Olympic and NCAA swimmers. For the third straight year in a row, Waterford’s 12 and under boys medley and freestyle relay teams broke the prior year’s record. This year, the combination of Holden Carruthers, Isaac McKinnon, Liam Hennis and Kaden Langston broke the medley relay record to begin the meet and then McKinnon, Liam Hennis and Carruthers were joined by Colin Hennis to end the day by breaking the record in the freestyle relay.
Carruthers took home the highest point award in the 11/12 boys age group, marking the third year in a row that a Waterford swimmer has taken this prize.
Waterford’s next meet was on Tuesday, July 1 at 5:30 PM when they hosted New Sherwood. Waterford pool is located at 1600 Slane Road, Clemmons.
