April and May were rewarding and busy months for The Kiwanis Club of Clemmons.
Our speaker for the April 3 meeting was Melissa Wilson, director of development for the Enrichment Center in Winston-Salem. She detailed how the center enriches the lives of intellectually- or developmentally-challenged children. The center utilizes art-based programming, community events, celebrations, relationship building and life skills. The center currently serves approximately 144 individuals. Our club plans to visit the enrichment center in late May.
Members Jim Brosovic and Steve Danner are in the process of acquiring building supplies for our stand-alone, free mini-library. The location to place the box is yet to be determined.
Once again, this year we had a booth at the Clemmons Community Day at Jerry Long YMCA. We enjoyed giving away many bags of popcorn and Krispy Kreme donuts. Members participated in Annual Clemmons Cleanup Day. Several of our Key Club students also helped with the event.
In our May 15 meeting, Bob Bailey, the founder of House of Hope located on Van Zandt Road in Mocksville, was our guest speaker. The House of Hope is a facility that assists females from the ages of 13 to 18 years old who are struggling with life issues. They have space to house 6 patrons. They offer personal and family counseling, education, life skill lessons and guidance in a safe and caring environment. After our business meeting, members compiled appreciation bags for the volunteers in the Lunch Buddies program at Morgan Elementary.
We have planned a meeting for May 22 to gather information and strategies for starting an Aktion Club in the area. The meeting will be held at Union Hill Baptist Church at 8494 Lasater Road, Clemmons. Aktion Clubs are designed to be run and conducted by adults with disabilities.
Congratulations to our member Thao Sommerville for receiving the Governor’s Medallion Award for volunteer service.
The Kiwanis Club of Clemmons meets on the first and third Thursdays of each month. The meeting time is noon at the Trinity Elms Apartment Complex Community building at 7543 Fair Oaks Drive (just off Harper Road) second drive to the right. Anyone interested is welcome to come to a meeting. A light lunch will be served. For more information, contact thebeav1973@outlook.com.
