The Summer Shindig went off without a hitch on Saturday, providing local families the opportunity to enjoy music, food, volleyball and plenty of bubbles.

The event was held at the Jerry Long YMCA on Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m., and serves as a kickoff to the summer for families throughout the village and surrounding areas.

The event was headlined by local band Knuckles Deep, but one of the more eye-catching attractions was provided by Rockstar Bubbles, who brought foam cannons that filled the area with bubbles.

The Shindig also included a Mobile Arcade USA gaming truck and plenty of food trucks.

As part of the partnership with the YMCA, the event also included half of the BASH Volleyball Tournament. On Saturday, the triples tournament was held while the Reverse Coed Doubles were held on Sunday. All proceeds from registration and sponsorships from the tournament went to the YMCA.

Events Coordinator Lynette Fox wrote in an email that in the first iteration of the Summer Shindig, it was held on the fields in front of the YMCA while the volleyball tournament occurred on the fields behind, so “they really had no connection at all. You couldn’t even tell one event was going on while the other was happening simultaneously.”

This is the third iteration of the event, which was started in 2023 in order to provide an opening to the summer events, which will include Christmas in July, National Night Out and the weekly farmer’s markets.

The town has been working to slowly grow the event as well, said Fox. Changes have included renting out a full stage from the City of Winston-Salem “instead of just having a band play on the back of a public works trailer,” she said.

The event has been sponsored every year by AM Erectors.

“A heartfelt thank you to all who came out and made the evening one to remember,” wrote Fox in an email.
