As with most gardening endeavors, there is much to do in the spring. The Bermuda Run Garden Club’s activities of the last month are a great example.
It was a thrill that the Garden Club of North Carolina, which is celebrating 100 years this year with the theme “Blooming Into the Next Century,” chose Winston-Salem for the party. Held at Embassy Suites, our club was well-represented in the floral competition. Diane Guthrie won the blue ribbon, the judges’ choice and the peoples’ choice awards. Ann Cornwell and Beth Wright both took second places and Amy Bridges earned a third. We are very proud of our representation at this statewide event. This was a great time to connect with many other garden clubs from across the state.
The Community Centerpiece committee, chaired by Janet DeLong and Diane Guthrie, met on May 5 and created charming bouquets of yellow and green adorned with golf tees and a red flag labeled “19th hole,” all in a bucket of golf balls. After being admired on the tables at the Crosby Golf Tournament they were later repurposed to bring joy to the residents at Bermuda Village on Mother’s Day. Those participating were PJ Guerra, Diana Kaylor, Cathy Zeitvogel, Holly Loke, Carol Quinn, Janet DeLong, Cornwell, Karen Cohn and Diane Guthrie.
The May meeting was a fun field trip to Elderberry Creek Nursery and Farm in Pfafftown. While at Elderberry Creek, owner James Helms gave a fantastic presentation on perennials and gave us a list of garden pollinators. We will put our knowledge to work when we begin one of our community projects, the pollinator garden along the Blue Heron Trail. We were able to make some purchases for our home gardens. We ended the outing with lunch and a business meeting at River Birch Restaurant.
Looking ahead, we will share the joy of gardening with the students at Ellis Middle School’s Garden Club on May 19. Our June 4 meeting will be our annual picnic at Winmock Granary, one of two times a year we invite our significant others. June 10 will find Cindy O’Hagan and PJ Guerra leading us in creating Senior Bouquets for Davie County Meals on Wheels recipients.
We hope you are inspired in some way to enjoy the beauty of nature and discover the thrill of watching things grow.
