CLEMMONS — The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County has announced that this year’s “Lyrics by the Lake” series will include a one-day festival free to the public.
Lyrics by the Lake is a community-based cultural arts series that features musical performances from local and touring artists, spoken word poetry, comedy, live painting and a vendors market. Hosted by LB the Poet and Corey “Mr. Petty” Jones, the event has drawn hundreds of attendees over its last four years at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Winston-Salem, formerly known as SECCA.
This year, the event has been moved to the Concert Shell at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons in a bid to attract a greater number of attendees through a larger stage, larger crowd area and a larger vendors market, including food vendors. In addition to bringing the event to Clemmons, the Arts Council is adding a free one-day festival, scheduled for Sunday, May 18, from 2 to 6 p.m.
“We’re so grateful for the four seasons of programming that we hosted at SECCA, and are excited to continue to grow the event and explore new venues,” Lyrics by the Lake co-founder E’laina Barron is quoted as saying in a press release. “While previous years have included four or five events per season, Lyrics by the Lake: Live at Tanglewood Park will be our one event this season, so you don’t want to miss it.”
The event will feature performances from returning crowd favorites and new guests including W.O.R.D. Society (Writers Of Raw Distinction), neo-soul musician Flower in Bloom, Charlotte-based songwriter and MC Tukool Tiff, hip-hop and soul artist Troya, Winston-Salem musician KamDoja and DJ Micki Blendz.
Lyrics by the Lake: Live at Tanglewood Park is part of the Arts Council’s 10th Annual Parks Concert Series, produced in partnership with the Forsyth County government. The concert series provides free, family-friendly concerts with local and national musicians in outdoor venues. The following installment of the Parks Concert Series will feature The Martha Bassett Show at Tanglewood Park on Sunday, June 22.
This concert takes place at Tanglewood Park, 4061 Clemmons Road, Clemmons. Free parking is available adjacent to the band shell. Gates open at 1 p.m. and the concert will be from 2 to 6 p.m.
Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs, and may bring a picnic or purchase food from vendors onsite. Wine, beer and water will be available for purchase, with all proceeds supporting the Arts Council. No outside alcohol is permitted. Kids of all ages are invited to participate in family-friendly arts activities sponsored by Publix Charities. Dogs on leashes are welcome.
In the event of inclement weather, the concert will take place at Hanesbrands Theatre, 209 N. Spruce St., Winston-Salem. Check the Arts Council’s website and social media for day-of venue updates.
