Membership meetings were held on Feb. 6 and 20.
Items of discussion:
Due to weather and illness, members decided to clean designated sections of the highway project independently. Next Clemmons Community Cleanup Day is set for May 3.
Hosting a pet food supply drive for a few weeks, raising money for the Swannanoa Grassroots Alliance and The Black Mountain Children’s Home which were impacted by Helene.
Thao Sommerville and Joel Schanker visited Salisbury Kiwanis.
Barbara Schanker presented an itemized financial report. Michael Watson reminded members of the Clemmons Community Day on April 26. The booth for Community Day has been reserved. The club plans to have the popcorn machine and offer free popcorn again. The club has an adequate number of supplies needed for the day. He reminded members of the upcoming volunteer opportunities at Morgan Elementary. They need assistance for the April 4 Career Day.
Membership/publicity chair Ina Beavers will submit monthly articles to local newspapers. She suggested the club reinstate their fifth week meeting day social that was stopped during COVID. The next fifth meeting day will be May 29.
In honor of the club’s 42 birthday, Schanker provided a birthday cake. Joel and Barbara also purchased six commercial spots on WFDD. A location for the spaghetti fundraiser in September has been chosen. Plans and logistics for the event can now be solidified.
Funding for a small pickup/drop off library box project was approved. Members requested that we investigate literary/tutoring projects. The Read-Write-Spell program was mentioned as a possible group to partner with.
It was approved to reward the annual high school scholarship. The exact amount and method of disbursement will be determined later.
Schanker proposed extending the meeting time from 60 to 90 minutes to allow adequate time for speakers and club business afterwards. It was tabled for later discussion.
Joanne LeDonne mentioned that the Davie High School JROTC needs donations. No action taken at this time. The club then discussed several methods to build membership.
The Kiwanis Club of Clemmons meets on the first and third Thursdays of each month. The meeting time is noon at the Trinity Elms Apartment Complex Community building at 7543 Fair Oaks Drive, the second drive to the right. Anyone interested is welcome to come to a meeting.
