The West Forsyth girls lacrosse team continued its hot streak this past week with two Central Piedmont 4-A wins against East Forsyth and Mount Tabor.
Against East Forsyth this past Tuesday in Kernersville, Gabby Vestal led West Forsyth with five goals as it won 17-2.
West Forsyth led 13-0 at halftime.
“We started the week with a conference game traveling to East Forsyth. East is definitely rebuilding. That’s what we expected.” Titans Coach Doug Brawley said. “The girls played really well — very much a team-led effort. And they looked very strong.”
In addition to Vestal, Kayleigh Mutkus scored four goals for the Titans, and Tatum Snow and Brighde Mullen added three goals apiece.
The Eagles are 2-7 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
West Forsyth followed the win against East Forsyth with a 20-7 rout of Mount Tabor Friday night in Clemmons, led by six goals by Snow.
Vestal chipped in with five goals against Mount Tabor (0-6, 0-6), and Mullen scored four.
“We played Mount Tabor (Friday) night and we were able to let all of our reserves play,” Brawley said. “Mount Tabor did score seven goals. It was against a lot of our reserve players.”
The Titans led 8-7 at halftime, but outscored the Spartans 12-0 in the second half.
West Forsyth was scheduled to have played Atkins in a nonconference game last Monday, but it was rained out. That game has been tentatively rescheduled for April 25.
West Forsyth (11-4, 7-0) was scheduled to have played host to Hickory (8-4) Tuesday night in a nonconference game.
“I don’t know anything about Hickory,” Brawley said. “We played them last year and the year before, and they’ve been competitive games. And we should be prepared and ready to go there.”
West Forsyth was scheduled to have played host to Glenn Wednesday night in a conference game. It’s a rematch of a game played in Kernersville on March 25 in which West Forsyth won 20-2.
On Thursday night, West Forsyth is scheduled to play host to Waxhaw Cuthbertson (7-5).
“They are super-strong,” Brawley said. “We’re going to have our hands full. Probably one of the top 10 teams in the state.”
Boys lacrosse
Not only did the girls lacrosse team have a strong week, the West Forsyth boys lacrosse team matched the girls team with conference wins against East Forsyth and Mount Tabor.
The boys were scheduled to have played Watauga last Monday, but it was rained out.
“We were supposed to play Watauga (last) Monday. It got rained out,” said West Forsyth Coach Jacob Able. “So, we would’ve liked to have had that one. We felt like we could’ve beat those guys and that would’ve helped us with the rankings for state playoffs. You know, it is what it is.”
This past Tuesday, West Forsyth (10-3, 4-3) defeated East Forsyth 8-4 in Kernersville.
“That was a really big one. They have a really solid defense over there,” Able said. “We knew it was going to be an important game for conference standings.
“Exciting for me. I teach at Kernersville Middle School, so I got to see some of my former students there.”
The Eagles are 3-7 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
And this past Friday, West Forsyth edged Mount Tabor 8-6 in Clemmons in the rain.
According to Able, Milo Lester scored late to give West Forsyth an 8-6 lead.
“(Friday) night, rainy, cold,” Able said. “Our offense was clearly affected by the weather. Wasn’t playing their best. Tabor came out to play, so it was a close one.”
The Spartans are 2-8 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
West Forsyth was scheduled to play host to Hickory (8-4) in a nonconference game on Tuesday.
“I’ve watched a little bit of film, looked at their results on (MaxPreps.com),” Able said. “I think it’s going to be a really good game. I think they have a very, very, very good offense, and I think our offense is better than their defense. So, it all depends on us and how we play.”
Just a day after the Hickory game, West Forsyth is scheduled to play host to Glenn (4-6, 1-5) in a conference game. West Forsyth defeated Glenn 15-7 on March 25 in the first meeting.
“That’s the way things have gone in the past, not including last year (West Forsyth went winless),” Able said. “Every other year towards the end of the year we always drop at least one game that we should win because we go into it thinking that the game’s already over. So, I’m trying to make that impression on the boys.”
Girls soccer
The West Forsyth girls soccer team only had one game this past week, but they made it count as Leigha Curry scored two goals to help defeat Mount Tabor 3-0 in a conference game in Clemmons.
The Mount Tabor game wasn’t the only game on the original schedule for this past week. Last week’s conference game against East Forsyth (7-3-1, 4-1) was rained out and will be made up later.
Against Mount Tabor (9-3-1, 3-3-1), West Forsyth (8-3-1, 6-0) scored three second-half goals to win after a scoreless first half.
“I think the first 10 minutes of the game, Tabor threw a lot of pressure on us,” West Forsyth Coach Jeffrey Williams said. “Again, we weren’t able to get the ball on the ground and play the way we wanted. Especially after the first 20 minutes or so, we were able to get a lot of good chances.
“We had a lot of good chances in the first half we didn’t capitalize on.”
Willlams said that all three goals were scored early in the second half. Other than Curry’s two goals, Allie Ramseur scored the other.
“All three (goals) were by freshmen,” he said.
West Forsyth is scheduled to play at Parkland (0-12, 0-6) on Wednesday. West Forsyth won the first meeting between the two teams 12-0 on March 19.
“I look at this week as, we’re not really coming off of a game until Thursday,” Williams said. “So, we’ll have Monday and Tuesday of really intense training.”
Baseball
Just like all the other spring sports this week baseball was also affected by the rain last week.
West Forsyth (14-3, 10-0) was originally supposed to play home and away against Parkland in two conference games. However, those were changed to playing a doubleheader this past Tuesday in Clemmons.
The scheduled nonconference game this past Wednesday at Northern Guilford was canceled because of rain.
In the two games against Parkland (1-17, 0-10), West Forsyth won 15-0 in three innings in the first game and 20-0 in the second game.
In the first game, William Holden was 3 for 3 with three runs, Parker Trexler was 2 for 2 with a run, Brayden Seeley was 2 for 2 and Luis Acevedo was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI. Josh Pendergrass pitched three no-hit innings and had seven strikeouts and no walks for the win.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Zane Culler also no-hit Parkland with nine strikeouts and one walk.
Jonathan Howard led the Titans after going 3 for 3 with two runs and four RBIs. Holden, Trexler and Hunter Lambeth added two hits apiece.
This week, West Forsyth picked up a home nonconference game Monday night against Rockingham County. In addition, West Forsyth is scheduled to play two conference games against Mount Tabor (4-10, 2-8) this week — at Mount Tabor on Tuesday and home on Thursday.
“We have to focus down the stretch and finish,” West Forsyth Coach Kevin McIntosh said. “With six games left we can’t lose focus of the big picture and have to continue to play baseball like we are capable of doing.”
Softball
After going undefeated, West Forsyth was tripped up by Forbush 3-0 Wednesday night in a nonconference game in East Bend.
Forbush (13-4) scored two runs in the first inning and added an insurance run in the fifth. West Forsyth was held to two hits.
“Their pitcher (Ellie Southern) is a senior. She’s very good,” West Forsyth Coach Kevin Baity said. “Well, she’s been good for four years, but she’s been inconsistent. Last year we beat them 6-0 and I think we had 12 hits. Same girl.
“We had two hits. She just shut us down. She pitched really well, and of course their runs were unearned. We gave up two in the first and one in the fifth. So, that was it, 3-0. But it didn’t hurt us. It might’ve been a wakeup call.”
Last Monday’s scheduled home nonconference game against Rockingham County was postponed because of rain, but both teams are still trying to find a date they can play. Last Friday’s home meeting against Glenn (9-8, 4-4) was scheduled to have been made up on Monday. West Forsyth (17-1, 10-0) won the first meeting 8-1 on March 18 in Kernersville.
In addition to its scheduled game against Glenn, West Forsyth is scheduled to play host to Reagan (15-3, 8-2) Tuesday night and at Davie County (11-5, 6-3) Friday night, both in conference games. West Forsyth won the first meeting against Reagan 7-4 on March 21, and West Forsyth upended Davie County 12-2 in the first meeting on March 25 in Clemmons.
“Tuesday is it,” Baity said. “You know, if we beat Reagan Tuesday (and Glenn on Monday) we’re three games up on everybody.”
