The most anticipated time of the school year is finally here, and the Titans are filled with excitement to celebrate the long-awaited junior and senior prom. For many, the dance is a significant part of the high school experience, representing how far they have come as people and students since their freshman year. From dinner reservations with friends to matching outfits with a date, prom is the current talk of the town as the Titans prepare for their big night.
Held on April 5 at the Millennium Event Center in downtown Winston-Salem, the event will begin at 7 p.m. and end at 11 p.m. The theme for this year’s prom is “A Starry Night,” representing celestial visuals as well as artist Vincent van Gogh’s famous work, and many students feel that the theme is perfect for their night on the dance floor.
“For the theme, I love the elegance of it. There is a good color palette and people can interpret the theme any way they want, that way they can have a dress or outfit that subtly follows the theme even if it isn’t fully obvious,” senior Zoey Krause said.
Others have strayed away from the prom theme, instead wearing the color and style of outfit that is perfect for them.
“The theme announcement came out a little bit late and I did not plan accordingly, so I have a hot pink dress and it does not go with the starry night theme, but I love it so I don’t mind,” senior Kaylee Styers said.
The Titans have been on the edge of their seats waiting for their big event, lining up from March 27 to April 3 to purchase their tickets to enter. Each prom ticket is selling for $55 and students are able to purchase a ticket for themself and one guest, as long as they have no outstanding fees to the school. Many are attending prom with their friends to enjoy one of the last large events of the school year before graduation.
“I’m really looking forward to my friend group being together for one last big bang and I’m really grateful we can spend the time to celebrate the year with each other,” Styers said.
Although it is a dance, prom is still a significant event as it marks the near end of the year, and the upcoming start of a new adventure for those beginning college. Many students have looked forward to prom since they were very young, and the dance represents their growth over the years.
“It’s my last big event as a high schooler so that is a big milestone to reach. It’s crazy that we have finally made it to prom. To prepare, I went and bought new makeup and my heels, and I’m shopping online to get ready because it is such a big event,” senior Jazmin Clavijo said.
However, some seniors attended prom last year as juniors, and feel that their experience may not be able to be topped.
“I’m not going to prom because I went last year and it was great, and I don’t think I will be able to match or top last year’s experience so I don’t want to do it again,” senior Gray Dimock said.
Prom night is guaranteed to be a great time for every student that attends, and West’s campus is certainly buzzing with excitement and chatter over pre-prom plans and outfit details. The juniors and seniors attending will reflect on their achievements during the year, as they have made it to a significant milestone that is commonly looked forward to. The upperclassmen are sure to enjoy themselves during the dance as they take a bit of time away from their studies to celebrate themselves and their peers.
