The town of Lewisville has selected Tom Lawson, a former mayor and council member, to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Julie Puckett from the board last month.
Lawson, who has been serving as the chairman of the planning board, was the mayor of Lewisville from 2005-2007, followed by three consecutive terms on the town council from 2007-2013 — for a total of eight consecutive years.
Lawson received a majority vote from the council in last Thursday night’s briefing to replace Puckett. He was scheduled to receive the oath of office in Thursday night’s regular council meeting in town hall.
Town Manager Stacy Tolbert said that the town will be filling his seat on the planning board upon Lawson’s departure.
“That is actually good timing because that’s our regular appointment time, the March regular meeting, for boards and committees anyhow, so we’ll just appoint one to fill that seat,” she said.
It was announced at the town’s annual retreat that Puckett, a political newcomer who was elected to a council seat in 2023, had submitted her resignation from the board.
Puckett stated that she regretted the inconvenience of her decision, but said that commitments with her work schedule along with all that has occurred in her personal life in the past year and a pending move out of North Carolina made it impossible for her to give the council and town the time required to be engaged and effective in her position on the council.
Lawson will fill the remainder of Puckett’s term, which was set to expire after 2025 as council members serve two-year terms. The seat will be up for election in November.
