The Titans have been keeping busy these past few weeks, with many extracurricular activities and events taking place. These events, mostly run by students, keep the Titans connected to campus and allow them to learn about the different clubs that West has to offer.
Hosted by the Girls Service Club in partnership with the Red Cross, the second on-campus blood drive was held last week. The GSC previously hosted a blood drive earlier in October, but decided to hold another after the first event’s success. The students involved in the club each took shifts to facilitate the blood drive, checking donors in and ensuring that the process ran smoothly.
After donors got their blood drawn, the students kept an eye on them, providing snacks and water before giving them the green light to go back to class. This partnership with the Red Cross has allowed for extremely successful blood drives at West, often causing the GSC to exceed their goals, this time collecting 113 units of blood, and 35 percent of people were first time donors. The GSC has shown their impressive abilities and leadership in urging people to donate their blood, and each donation is much appreciated as it will help many people in need.
A new club has made its way to West, bringing with it a specific interest that was not previously represented on campus. The Young People Alliance serves to get students engaged in issues around their environments, such as deforestation and climate change, fighting for ways to make a difference. YPA aims to improve the community and give the youth a voice in advocating for the betterment of the environment.
YPA is a program that offers a four-week course about leadership and prompts students to find an issue they are passionate about, which is what club founders Izabel Cana-Cajbon and Amina Qureshi did when bringing YPA to West. The club is largely student driven and is making an effort to get their peers involved by bake sales in the bus lot after school. The bake sales provided students with information about the club and helped to spread YPA’s message.
The drama club has been extremely busy in preparation for their annual talent show, held on Feb. 18. The Titan Talent Show is a long awaited event each year, as the drama club does everything they can to make the performances extra special. The show this year is hosted by two senior theater students, Gray Dimock and Tanner Young. The hosts serve as the comedians for the evening and introduce each act before they make it to the stage.
There will also be acts from the teachers during this year’s talent show, which the drama club is in the process of preparing in order to keep the Titans on their toes for which of their educators they will see performing under the spotlight. The talent show is sure to be a hit thanks to the hard work of the drama students.
Finally, the Students Against Violence Everywhere and Destructive Decisions Club held a table in the cafeteria on Valentine’s Day where students could write a valentine card for someone they care for. SAVEDD aims to spread positivity on campus, reminding every student that they are loved, welcomed and appreciated by someone. The table was a hit, with many students making valentines and giving them to their special friends and teachers.
The extracurricular activities at West have been allowing for a month full of excitement and opportunities to expand one’s horizons, either through joining a new club or creating an act for the talent show. The Titans have been hard at work, and their efforts are visible through the events held each day.
