Clemmons Elementary School held its annual Science Fair last week.
Students in grades three through five presented their projects for judging on February 2. Fifth grader Madison Serpan was selected as the overall winner and will represent the school at the district competition, which will be held at SciWorks in Winston-Salem.
Serpan, a student in Mrs. Vanderford’s class, won for her project titled “Color Confusion: Does the Color of a Drink Influence a Person’s Perception of the Taste?”
Fourth grader Mary Kate Leopard placed second with her project, “Is Yawning Contagious?”
Every fifth grade student is required to submit a project for the fair. Participation from students in grades three and four is voluntary.
“The students are able to pick any subject they want for their projects,” explained first grade teacher Leonard Hutchens, who coordinated this year’s fair. “We’re really looking to see how well the students follow the scientific method.”
