Cele Shaver, Lee Binkley win contest
By Dwight Sparks
-
Gentle Readers, the brackets are in, the office pool is set. All that’s left is to fill in the basketball contest slots and wait for the money.
The Contest Director, unlike one year, only lists games this week that are played on Friday after 5 p.m. — our deadline. Once, he almost coughed up the grand prize because he listed some Thursday games in the NCAA March Madness.
Wisdom has come with age.
That means some of this week’s slate had to be balanced with the Saturday NBA schedule.
Last week’s winner?
CELE SHAVER, COME ON DOWN!
Cele has been quiet this year in the contest. Last year, she and husband Glenn dominated one season, collecting a closet of caps and cash. She missed three games in the all-NBA week.
Cele wasn’t home to take our Call of Calls, but Glenn stepped in.
“She was Close But No Cigar last week,” he said. “She has won more than me now.”
But the Shavers are living evidence that playing the contest is good for a marriage. Gentle Readers, you should take your spouse by the hand tonight, cuddle up on the sofa with pencils and the contest form. Beautiful things will happen, and you might get a Cap of Cap out of the deal, too.
“It’s a lot of fun,” Glenn said. “We enjoy doing it. We’ve gotten our neighbors, Flake and Joann Steele, to play.”
Which means the Shavers also win our MISSIONARY AWARD, evangelizing the unwashed and bringing them into the fold of the great contest players across the nation.
Second place?
LEE BINKLEY, COME ON DOWN!
Binkley, our San Antonio, Tex. connection, also missed three but was relegated to second on the tie breaker.
Now for our coveted non-cash prizes:
CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR AWARD: To those missing four - Lindsay Stombaugh, Glenn Shaver, Ron Weiderman, Tuan Nguyen of Las Vegas; missing five, Kevin Wendelboe, Ashley McCormick of High Point, Joanne Clark of Melbourne, Fla., and Ken Hester.
FOOTBALL AWARD: To those missing the most — Donna Carter goofing on 13; honorable mention to Shawn Painter, Wendy Boling, missing 12.
Now to our Mail Bag:
• This from Ali Madigan of UNC, “I was close to the Close But No Cigar — that’s a big step for me, but I broke the mother-daughter chain.”
• Doug Hill, “Well, I asked for the pros and now I got them. So what will I do? I am sure as in the past. Still awaiting a call, any call.”
• Clark Golden, “I asked for the pros last week, but I didn’t think you would do it.”
• Martin Books, “Praise God for two in a row.”
Good luck to all.
