West Forsyth’s Amy Maxey
named ‘teacher of year’

A mathematics teacher at West Forsyth HighSchool has been named the 2008-09 Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Teacher of the Year.
Amy Maxey was presented the award during a surprise ceremony Friday morning at West Forsyth.
Maxey has 13 years of teaching experience, all as a math teacher at West Forsyth.
“We are excited to announce Amy Maxey as the 2008-09 Teacher of the Year,” said Dr. Don Martin, the superintendent of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. “She obviously is an outstanding teacher, and she also exemplifies the type of teacher we want to represent our school system.”
Added Kurt Telford, principal of West Forsyth: “West Forsyth is very fortunate to have such a talented and caring educator working at our school. Amy is a master teacher who demands excellence from every student.
Her classroom is full of excitement, and all students are made to feel that they are important and capable.”
“I am honored to receive this award,” Maxey said. “I love teaching and working with my students. To watch a student grow, academically and personally, is very rewarding. My students are very special to me.”
Maxey has a bachelor’s degree from Campbell University.
Other finalists for 2008-09 Teacher of the Year were Terry Alexander of Meadowlark Elementary, Tamara Harrington of Reagan High and Laurie Smith of East Forsyth High.
