Megan Painter, Libby Bovender take contest cash

By Dwight Sparks - Gentle Readers, we have added again to our new generation of players, making sure this Contest of Contests will last through this century.
This week, Hannah Bovender became our new youngest player. She’s the granddaughter of Clemmons beauty Libby Bovender and football coaching legend Jim Bovender, two of our regulars. (More on Libby later.) Little Hannah, 3 months, is the daughter of Brad and Margaret Bovender. Brad, of course, has long struggled with the contest, but he’s more than answered the higher calling of parenthood. Both parents have played.
Hannah seems to know that. “I am only 3 months old, and I still think I can beat my daddy!” she wrote on her entry form.
Now for last week’s winners:
MEGAN PAINTER, COME ON DOWNNN! Painter emerged on top among 11 people who missed six games. Everyone expected a low-scoring game between Furman and UNC. They combined for 87 points.
Second place?
LIBBY BOVENDER, COME ON DOWNN!!
Showing her granddaughter the ropes, Libby missed three NFL games and three college games to take the consolation prize.
Now for our coveted non cash awards.
CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR AWARD: To others missing six — Blaine Nichols, James Mathis, Hunter Hester, Bryan Mathis, Brad Bovender, Dick Montgomery, Mary Binkley, Shirley Martin, Rob Sipprell.
MR. CONSISTENCY AWARD: To Reed Romine, missing seven this week after taking first last week.
BASKETBALL AWARD: To those missing the most — Ali Madigan of UNC, missing 16; honorable mention to Sheila Evans of Greensboro, Susie Martin and Nancy Hendrix, all missing 15.
RETURN OF THE NATIVE AWARD: To Darren Webber of Lewisville, missing nine games after a long hiatus from the contest.
Now to our Mail Bag:
• This from Lovely Leslie Madigan of Charlottesville, Va., “Back to the family Basketball Award. Way to go, Ali.”
• Don Clark of Melbourne, Fla, “After last week who can say much? I thought I had the best pick in the whole country. But when you’re a Cubs fan, what can you expect?”
• Martin Brooks of Charlotte, “$2,500 sure sounds good to me.”Alas, Gentle Martin missed 11.
• Clark Golden of Lewisville, “Lots of fun to pore over these choices and make my selections. Be even more fun if I could win a cap!”
• Hal Newell of Cranberry Isle, Maine, “We are looking for a big week with the football contest. The seagulls and lobsters have helped me with my picks. Go Panthers.”
Good luck to all.
