Winning dads: Joel Davis, Brad Bovender

By Dwight Sparks - Gentle Readers, the baby boom continues. As it turns out, having babies seems to improve your chances for winning this Contest of Contests. Both this week’s winners are new fathers.
First place: JOEL DAVIS, COME ON DOWN! He is the proud father of a son, now 4 months old. Dad missed four games to win.
Davis, a Raleigh resident, is part of the contest playing Davis family. Brother Todd of Charlotte also enters. Brother Neal of Lewisville plays. Sometimes sister Amanda of Ft. Worth, Tex., checks in.
They are the children of Les and Diane Davis of Clemmons, who obviously nurtured and taught their children well.
As for the newcomer, Corbin Moyer Davis is doing well. His mother is Kristi Moyer Davis, formerly of Wilson. There’s another member of the family, daughter Kensly, 4.
Davis said he may teach his newborn to enter the contest very soon. “I’m going to have him pick names out of a hat. Maybe he can win the co-pays for his doctor visits.”
Second place: BRAD BOVENDER, COME ON DOWNN!!
Bovender has been a chronic bottom-of-the-pack finisher until he became a father recently. Now, it’s amazing how much smarter he is. He also missed four.
Now for our coveted non cash awards.
CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR AWARD: To others missing four but denied the cash — James Mathis of Port Orange, Fla., Ron Weiderman; missing five — Dick Montgomery, Mary Jo Painter, Jerry Morrison, Todd Davis, Ali Madigan, Matt Reese, Allen Brown, Doug Hill, Andrew Mayse, Greg Mussell.
BASKETBALL AWARD: For those missing the most — Donna Carter, dropping 17.
MOST IMPROVED AWARD: To Ali Madigan of UNC-Chapel Hill, proving than in her sophomore year she has learned so much that she’s almost worthy of a doctorate. She missed five to come close again. “That is the closest I have ever gotten and it might be the last time I get that close!” she wrote. “I can’t complain because I could never not pick the Tar Heels. Luckily, they have a bye this week.”
WORST INSULT: One of our contest players wanted another game listed, UNC v. Bye. That could have gone either way.
Now to our Mail Bag:
• This from Doug Hill: “This is the week! I got locks on the contest. Sponsors tremble. I will be awaiting the Call of All Calls come Monday. The Cap of All Caps is going to a new home. That was a nice little pep talk, but it is bogus. No one is going to take the Big Bucks. Sponsors, please exhale.”
• From David McIntosh: “Let’s get the WCU games listed.”
• Darren Webber of Lewisville, “Being from Indiana, I must go with my Boilermakers, and even though Purdue may get smashed, you got to love them. The TRUE gold and black.”
• Last week’s winner Kevin Wendelboe, “You can have my cell (number) now so I don’t miss the Call of Calls anymore.”
Good luck to all.
