Community theater forms in Clemmons
By Summer Smith
-
The newly-formed Clemmons Community Theater will open the curtain on its first production on Thursday, November 30.
“I Love Ruthie,” an original musical based on the Bible’s book of Ruth, will be directed by Brad Williams. Auditions will be held on Wednesday, November 1 and Thursday, November 2 at 7 p.m. at New Hope Presbyterian Church. The church is located at 2570 Harper Road in Clemmons.
Those auditioning should prepare a song and will be asked to to read from the script.
“We have incorporated and are in the process of getting our 501 (c) (3) non-profit designation,” said Norm Birdsall, one of the group’s organizers. “We have between 250 to 350 members now, but we need a whole lot more.”
Birdsall said members of New Hope approached him about forming the group one year ago.
“I have been active in community theater from Burlington to Statesville,” said Birdsall. “I knew getting this started would be a long and involved process, but I told them I would be happy to help. I told everyone I could to come out and help get us off the ground.”
Birdsall believes the theater will be a positive addition to the community.
“I think Clemmons needs this. It will be a great outlet for anyone interested in arts and theater. We have lots of talented people here, and this will be an avenue for them to express themselves.”
Clemmons residents who participate in or attend shows staged by Lewisville’s West Side Civic Theatre will now have another option open to them, he added.
“Lewisville’s productions take place outdoors and are only done in the summer. Our shows will be indoors, which will allow us to stage them anytime.”
Birdsall said the group plans to present two shows per year, one in December and the other in March or April. The board of directors has already received some funding, but the group will need more donations to stay afloat.
“All arts programs live on grants,” said Birdsall. “Ticket sales don’t really pay for production costs, so we will be soliciting people for help.”
In addition to actors, the group also needs people to help with sets, costumes and props.
“It’s all very wide open right now. We don’t have anyone in place yet, so we welcome all the help we can get,” Birdsall stated.
The show dates are November 30 and December 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9. All shows will begin at 8 p.m. at the New Hope Community Center. Tickets will cost $5, and seating will be on a first-come, first served basis.
Anyone who would like more information or has questions about the auditions should contact director Brad Williams at 721-9194.
