Obituaries for Nov. 13, 2008

- Ellard Earl Farmer
Mr. Ellard Earl Farmer, 82, passed away November 7, 2008 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Fanning County, GA, to the late Claude and Catherine Wilson Farmer. Mr. Farmer retired from Western Electric with 34 years of service. After his retirement, he enjoyed working in his body shop and garden. He loved his horses and cows and being with his grandchildren. Mr. Farmer is survived by his loving wife, Clara Farmer; a daughter, Pamela K. Farmer; two sons, Mike Farmer (Janice) and Randy Farmer (Christine); three grandchildren, Timothy Chad Johnson, Natalie Nicole Johnson, and Brandon Joseph Farmer; a brother, Fred Farmer; and four nieces. A Funeral Service were conducted Sunday, November 9, 2008 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Egbert Craven, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.

Sheridan Lee Hall
Mr. Sheridan Lee Hall, 86, passed away Thursday, November 6, 2008 at Oak Forest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born November 27, 1921 in Harvey, West Virginia to Walker and Mildred Hughes Hall. Mr. Hall was a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church. He loved working outside in his yard and garden. He started a hobby of collecting gemstones and that eventually turned into a small business called Lee Hall Gemstones. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sons, Allan and Bryan. Surviving are his loving wife of 62 years, Opalee Hall of the home; two daughters, Shari Sinnott, and Lisa Hale and husband, George IV; two sons, Dana Hall and Gregory Hall and wife, Joanne, all of Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Funeral Services were conducted Sunday, November 9, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Neill Shaw officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Pine Grove United Methodist Church, 1130 Jonestown Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Kenneth Brown Compton
Mr. Kenneth Brown Compton, 81, died on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at Village Care in King after a long illness. He was born on December 1, 1926 in Cedar Grove, NC to the late Robert Ralph and Carrie McDade Compton. Ken served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Regansburg, Germany. After graduating from Duke University, he was employed by The Fidelity Bank of Durham for nine years; Jefferson Standard Life, as the southeastern Regional Manager in their Mortgage Loan Division in Greensboro for eight years. He then moved to Winston-Salem in 1964 and worked for Wachovia Bank and Trust Company and Wachovia Mortgage Company and was elected Senior Vice President in 1969. In 1974, Ken started Kenneth B. Compton and Associates, a real estate appraisal group and retired in 1998. After retirement, he enjoyed volunteer work with the North Carolina Housing Foundation. He was a board member for eleven years and president for eight years. He was a member of the Golden “K” Kiwanis Club. A lifelong Presbyterian, he was a member of Parkway Presbyterian Church and was a deacon, and elder and a Sunday school teacher for many years. He also enjoyed work in earlier years with the Boy Scouts. In addition to his parents, Mr. Compton was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Boone Compton; and brothers, Robert, Burch, Harry and Charlie Compton. Surviving Kenneth are his wife, Johnsie G. Compton, whom he married in 1980; son, Keith Compton (Pamela); grandson, Jonathan; brother, Fred Compton (Laverne); sister, Camelia Lloyd (Ben); sisters-in-law, Carolyn Compton and Zonie Compton; step-daughters, Anita Kinnier (Ed), Libby Lucas (Sam) and Kelli Horne (Jim); grandchildren, Alec and Abigail Lucas and Gray Kinnier; and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 9, 2008 at Parkway Presbyterian Church, 1000 Yorkshire Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27106 with the Rev. Dan Wilkers officiating. Ada Shore Bailey Jones
Mrs. Ada Shore Bailey Jones, 90, of Winston-Salem passed away Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born November 27, 1917 in Forsyth County to William J. Shore Sr. and Esther Cornish Shore. Mrs. Jones was a very active member of Friedberg Moravian Church where she was a member of the Adult Bible Class and Senior Friends. She loved her family very much and was preceded in death by two loving husbands, Roy Nelson Bailey and Paul Lee Jones; her brothers and sisters; and a son-in-law, Fred Smith. Surviving are one son, Nelson Fletcher Bailey and wife, Evelyn of Thomasville; one daughter, Virginia B. Smith of Newport News, VA; a stepson, Pete Jones and wife, Burlee of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; six great-granddaughters; her faithful companion, Princess and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were conducted Friday, November 7, at Friedberg Moravian Church with the Rev. G. Thomas Shelton and the Rev. James C. Newsome officiating. Burial followed in the church graveyard. Edward Vincent Staab
Dr. Edward Vincent Staab, 72, passed away suddenly on Saturday, November 1, 2008. He was born in Albany, NY to the late Edward and Mary E. Staab. His most recent position was as Professor Emeritus of Radiologic Sciences - Radiology at Wake Forest. He also served with honor in Chair and Chief positions for the NIH/NCI, University of Florida, University of North Carolina, Vanderbilt, and as a Captain in his military service at Walter Reed, Fort Detrick, MD. He was a scientist, a scholar, a researcher, a doctor and played a large and active role in many philanthropic foundations. His life was full and his honors were many, including recognition as one of the Best Doctors in America, Top 20 Most Influential People in Radiology, and winner of numerous Hartman Gold Medals. Humble and kind, Ed’ s energy was matched only by his generosity and love for children. He was an active member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus and could often be seen on Sundays serving pancakes. His favorite pastime was golf, and he enjoyed traveling, music, gardening and all spectator sports. Surviving is his wife and soulmate of 51 years, Mary Jane Ackerman Staab, the mother of his five children: Barbara Staab May of Atlanta, Ken Staab and wife, Cheryl of Charlotte, Anne Staab Soeder and husband, Tom of Cary, Tom Staab and wife, Angel of Charlotte, and Rick Staab and wife, Michelle of Gainesville, FL. The joy of his life were his 11 grandchildren; Jordan and Sara Staab of Charlotte, Christy and Joey Soeder of Cary; Nick May of Atlanta, Tyler, Samantha and Luke Staab of Gainesville, and Maddy, Austin and Carter-John of Charlotte. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, November 6, 2008, at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home in Clemmons, NC. A Funeral Mass was conducted Friday, November 7, 2008 at Holy Family Catholic Church, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. A private family Graveside Service in Chapel Hill will be at a later date. Mary and the children would like to thank everyone for the tremendous out-pouring of prayers, love and support shown by so many during this tragic time. It is comforting to know that our father has touched so very many lives and we ask that you continue to pray for our Mother’ s speedy recovery. Keithel Von Ray Snow
God, in His infinite wisdom, called one of His saints’ home to heaven on November 9, 2008. Keithel Von Ray Snow of Lewisville, NC, bade this world goodbye, after a brief illness, and took his Heavenly flight, from his home here to his mansion there. He was born on August 27, 1953 to devoted parents, Rob and Maxine Snow of Winston-Salem, who survive. He grew up in this area, and graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School. Later in life, he felt a call from God, for special service, and attended Piedmont Bible College. He worked for 32 years at the Hanes Company, and was currently employed by Colliers International, a related sub-contracting firm. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Patricia (Patsy) Snow, a son, Nathan and a daughter, Amanda, all of the home; one brother Robbie Snow and wife Angie, of Winston-Salem, NC. He professed Christ, and joined Hanes Baptist Church in 1962, exemplifying a Christian in his daily life. He served as Deacon, and Sunday School Teacher; and in later years was involved in the music program, playing the mandolin at each service. His hobbies were gospel music and fishing. He was Characterized by his humility, graciousness, and willingness to assist as needed. Gospel songs and Biblical sermons will celebrate his wonderful life and Home going. Presiding will be his Pastor, Ron Groce, and a friend, Bro. Billy Seats. The Family will receive friends on Tuesdays, November 11, 6-8 p.m. at the Silas Creek location of Hayworth-Miller. The celebration service will be held at Hanes Baptist Church, 4210 Sabrina Lake Road, WS on Wednesday, November 12 at 11 o’ clock, but the body ill lie in state for thirty minutes prior to the service. Interment will be in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. The Family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the medical staff of Forsyth Medical Center, the ICU2 Unit, especially Dr. William Bray and Nurse Kathy Jay; also to the many friends who lovingly assisted the Family. Bro. Von Ray will be sorely missed, by lovingly remembered. So long, Bro. Von, “Until the day break, and the shadows flee away”. (Song of Solomon)
