Obituaries for Nov. 20, 2008

- Eugene Clinton Sapp Sr.
Mr. Eugene Clinton Sapp, Sr., 76, passed away Friday, November 14, 2008. He was born in Forsyth County on March 13, 1932 to the late James Walter and Sarah Mounce Sapp. Mr. Sapp was a member of Grapevine Baptist Church and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with several years of service. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Preceding him in death was a son, Gene Sapp; two sisters; and a brother. Surviving is his wife of 53 years, Bonnie Sapp; five children, Debbie Fulk (Mark), Gail Smith (Mike), Becky Smith (Robert), Sabrina Sapp, and Jerry Bryant; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Luther Saunders and numerous nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service was held November 18, 2008 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Ronnie Comer officiating. Burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. Pap, we will sorely miss your call each year to sing happy birthday to each of us. You were the best! We love you!

Marvin Martin Ward
Marvin Martin Ward, 94, died on Monday, November 10, at the Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro. A Memorial Service was held November 18, 2008, at Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem with the Reverend Jack B. Yarbrough officiating. Marvin was born on February 10, 1914, in Morrison, VA, to Charles T. and Nora B. Martin Ward. His father died when Marvin was very young; his mother taught fifth grade and reared her four children in East Bend, North Carolina. Marvin was named Valedictorian when he graduated from East Bend High School in 1930. He received a B.S. Degree in Mathematics and Science from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1934 and a Masters Degree in School Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1940. He began his career teaching Physics and Mathematics in Cabarrus County in 1934; in 1937, he began teaching at R. J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem. One year, ten of the top twenty scores in the state Physics contest were earned by his students. He also taught Physics during the summers of 1943 and 1944 at UNC-Chapel Hill. He coached state championship golf teams and girls’ basketball before being named Assistant Principal at Reynolds. He served as Principal of Granville Elementary School for three years. He was named Administrative Assistant Superintendent in 1949 and as Assistant Superintendent in 1955, supervising the construction of many Winston-Salem schools. He was appointed as Superintendent of the Winston-Salem City Schools in 1962 and worked hard to promote consolidation efforts. He served as Superintendent of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System from 1963 until his retirement in 1976. Marvin was elected to the North Carolina Senate in 1979 and represented Forsyth County for 16 years. He sponsored important legislation for North Carolina’ s Basic Education Plan and Career Ladder Plan and chaired the Education Appropriations Committee. He served on the Board of Stewards, as a Sunday School Teacher and as a Sunday School Superintendent at Centenary United Methodist Church. He was a Life Member of the American Association of School Administrators; a 50-year plus member of the Winston-Salem Lions Club; and a past president of the Ardmore Community Club. Leadership awards and commendations were presented to Marvin by many education and mental health organizations. In 1999, Appalachian State University created the Rhododendron Society to recognize alumni for outstanding professional accomplishments and contributions to education; Marvin was one of the first six recipients. In 2000, the Marvin Ward Elementary School was dedicated in his honor. His favorite pastimes included golf, fishing, woodcarving and travel. His favorite place was the front porch of Piney Point Cabin on the Shallotte River. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; by his brother, Charles Thomas Ward; and a sister, Mrs. C. W. (Winnie) Hobson. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary June Darden Ward of the home in Greensboro; by his sister, Mrs. Fred Dixon (Evelyn) Williams of Winston-Salem; his daughter, Elizabeth Darden (Betty) and her husband, Benjamin Cone, Jr. of Greensboro; his son, Marvin Thomas and his wife, Brenda of Palm Coast, FL; grandsons, Benjamin Cone, III and Samuel Martin Cone and his wife, Trina; and great-granddaughter, Darden Elizabeth Cone, all of Charlotte; nine first cousins; and eight nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank those who provided loving care for Marvin including Linda Starke, Lisa Johnson, Sharon Wright, Barbara Warren and the medical teams from 4700 and 4500 at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital and Palliative Care of Greensboro. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 658, Winston-Salem, NC 27102 or to The Marvin M. Beulah Hazelwood
Mrs. Beulah Hazelwood, 80, died Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Stokes County December 19, 1927 to A.G. Coley, Sr. and Laura Jane King Coley. She worked with Guardian Care as a housekeeper for 23 years. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Hazelwood, one son, Jesse Hayden, Sr.; two brothers, Oscar Coley and A.G. Coley, Jr., and one grandson, Ricky W. Pegram. She is survived by five children: William Russell Hayden, Sr. (Mary) of King, Hester Rascoe (Bobby) of Burlington, Anna Kidd (Lee) of Hamptonville, Martha Jane Burgess (Jimmy) of Pfafftown and Frances France of Dobson; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. The Funeral Service was conducted Saturday, November 15, 2008 at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clayton Smith officiating. The interment service followed Saturday in the Kidd-Hazelwood Family Cemetery in Hamptonville, NC.
Bobby Dean Robbins
Bobby Dean Robbins, age 68, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at his home in Clemmons, NC. He was born Nov 19, 1939 in Trumann, AR. He was a loving grandfather and devoted father who lived his life to the fullest. He will be greatly missed by all who were charmed by his easy manner and quick wit. He is preceded in death by his father Lee Roy “Buddy” Robbins. He is survived by his mother, Ruby Robbins of Trumann, AR; son, Greg Robbins and wife, Kimberly of Mooresville; daughter, Brenda Frucht and husband, Steve of Clemmons; their mother, Carolyn Robbins Keller; grandchildren, Meredith Robbins, Kate Frucht, Anna Frucht & Adam Frucht; sister, Melba O’ Brien and husband, Norman; brother, Don Robbins and wife, Charlotte; and longtime companion, Roxie Lunsford of Clemmons and her children, Misty Varner and Bart Lunsford. Bob served his country in both the Army and National Guard. He retired from AT&T, after 20 years to pursue a new career in home building; a trade he patiently passed on to his son and son-in-law. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14 at Augsburg Lutheran Church at 845 W. 5th St. in downtown Winston-Salem. Jerry Dean Denney
Mr. Jerry Dean Denney, age 53, of Clemmons, died Nov. 14, 2008, at Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Denney was a computer consultant and a worked for Black Tie Limo Service. Surviving are two sons; Kevin Dean Denney of Winston-Salem, Malcolm Brock Denney of Clemmons, his mother; Gladys Creed Denney of Sugar Grove, one sister, Sandra Denney of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, one brother; Michael Denney of Sugar Grove, one foster sister, Tammy Minton of Lenoir, one foster brother; Robert Minton of Vilas, his maternal grandmother, Stella Creed of Sugar Grove, and a number of cousins. Funeral services for Jerry Dean Denney were conducted Nov. 12 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Ray Greene and Rev. Derick Wilson. Burial followed at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Denney family in care of Austin & Barnes Funeral Home, 194 Queen Street, Boone, NC 28607. John Hugh Sells
John Hugh Sells, 74, of Winston-Salem died Monday, November 17, 2008 at his home. He was born December 17, 1933 in Forsyth County, the son of the late June and Una Durham Sells. Mr. Sells was of the Baptist faith and was retired from Crestwood Industries. In addition to his parents , he was preceded in death by a sister, Margie. Survivors include his wife, Louise Sells of the home; three sons, Johnny of Winston-Salem, Ronnie and wife Sheryle of Winston-Salem and Bill of Asheville; two grandchildren, Michael and Shara of TX; and one sister, Ruth Weldy and husband, Ed of Winston-Salem. The funeral service was conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Steven Corts officiating. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
