Obituaries for Dec. 18, 2008

- Betty D. Pennington
On Tuesday, December 9, 2008 Betty D. Pennington joined the angels to rejoice in heaven. After her battle with COPD and cancer her courageous battle came to an end at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, surrounded by family and friends. Betty leaves behind her loving husband and best friend Harley (Bill) Pennington. Also succeeding her in death are three daughters, Lynda Harper, Karen Harper and Lori Craft (Darren); two stepdaughters, Cathy Driver, Lisa McClure (Wayne); seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Betty the third of six children leaves behind two brothers, Lonnie Dalton (Carol), Roy Dalton (Frankie), Ruth Ketner (Bobby) and Catherine Wall (Weldon). Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Lula and Carl Dalton and one sister, Ethelen Dalton. Prior to her battle, Betty “BT” retired from R.J. Reynolds after many dedicated years in the Sports Marketing Department. She is a member of Grace Baptist Church, where she loved to make a “joyful noise” in the choir. In her spare time she helped tend the farm and grandbabies. Funeral services were held Friday, December 12, 2008 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Al Helms and Dr. R.D. Hamann officiating. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Ln., Winston-Salem, NC 27103 and/or Grace Baptist Church in Lewisville in Betty’s honor. John W. Shanks
John W. Shanks, 67, passed away Saturday, December 13, 2008. He graduated from Flaget High School in Louisville, KY. John was a Corrections Officer for the state of North Carolina in Davidson County. He was preceded in death by his only son, Christopher John Shanks, who was a Lexington, NC Police Officer; parents, Woodrow T. and Alma Shanks; and a brother, Thomas E. Shanks. Mr. Shanks is survived by his wife of 40 years, Agnes Shanks; grandchildren, Mattie and Brantley Shanks of Lexington; daughter-in-law, Sherry Stiltner of Lexington; brothers, Lou Shanks of Gaithersburg, MD and James Shanks of Louisville, KY; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at Holy Family Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m., prior to mass, at Vogler and Sons Funeral Home in Clemmons. Burial will follow the service at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church Choir Fund, 4820 Kinnamon Rd., Clemmons, NC 27012. On Saturday, December 13, 2008, Mrs. M. Josephine Teague Corriher, passed away at Bermuda Commons Nursing Home. Jo was born in Forsyth County on April 17, 1933 to the late Virgil Mae Teague and Jetty Jane Shore Teague. She was a long time member of Urban Street Baptist Church (Vernon Forest Baptist Church). She enjoyed her hobbies, which included crafts and fishing. There are many memories of Jo fishing with her family and friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Corriher was preceded in death by her husband, Henry L. Corriher; brothers, V.M. Teague, Jr., Charlie Teague, Jimmy Teague and David Teague; and sisters, Oma Cadwallader, Becky Vestrat and Colleen Teague. Surviving Jo are her daughters, June Reynolds and husband, Jimmy; Jane Phelps and husband, Wayne and Joan Whaley; son, Raymond Corriher and wife, Kathy; grandchildren, David, Laura, Kerrie, Justin, Miranda, Caitlin, Michael and Celeste; great-granddaughter, Payton; and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service was conducted on Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at Vogler and Sons Funeral Home in Clemmons with the Rev. Ed Sears officiating. Interment followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Winston-Salem, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Willie Earnest Haneline Jr.
Mr. Willie Earnest Haneline Jr., 61, of Clemmons, died unexpectedly Friday, December 12, 2008 at Duke Medical Center in Durham, NC. Earnest was born on July 1, 1947 in Forsyth Co., to Willie E. Haneline, Sr. and Grace Pettyjohn Morgan. He attended WSFCS and served in the U.S. Navy stationed at Holy Lochs, Scotland. On December 5, 1973 he married Patty Itami. Their marriage was later blessed with the birth of a wonderful son, Matthew. Earnest was employed by Piedmont Airlines, US Airways, and Timco as an aviation mechanic. Aside from being a skilled mechanic, Ernest was a talented craftsman. His talents included wood carving, creating stained glass designs, and a myriad of other fine crafts. Regardless of the hard work and time that went into his creations, Ernest always shared his gifts with others. His art will forever remind those that loved him of his unselfish heart. He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his wife, Patty; and son, Mathew of the home; cousin, Pat (Randy) Brown; daughter, Christine (James) Dudgeon; son, Charlie (Robyn) Brown; and special friends, Marsha and Mickey Earnhardt and their children, Marcie (Scott) Smith, Monica (Rod) Poindexter, and Mark (Jo) Earnhardt; and Karen and Donald Kiger and son, Cory Welch. Also Earnest’ s extended family and friends at U.S. Airways, Timco, and U.S. Airways Reservation ticketing department. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek. A Graveside Service will follow the visitation at 3 p.m. at Friedberg Moravian Church Graveyard with Rev. G. Thomas Shelton will be officiating the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association. Patty and Matt wish to thank Forsyth Medical Center pulmonary staff and Duke Medical Center Pulmonary ICU staff for their care, help, and compassion.

Thomas Mack Masters Sr.
Mr. Thomas Mack Masters Sr., age 78, passed away Friday December 12, 2008. He was born May 20 1930 in Walters Creek, Kentucky to Otis and Evelyn Masters. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Clemmons and was a professional painter. In addition to his parents, Mr. Masters was preceded in death by two wives, Mrs. Mary Louise Masters and Mrs. Pansy Wilkins Masters; and one son, Daniel Masters Sr. Surviving are three daughters: Mrs. Katherine Masters Taylor of Clemmons, Tammy Masters Barchiesi of Rhode Island, and Zera Marie Masters of Graham; five sons: Thomas Mack Masters Jr. of Kernersville, William “Billy” Masters of Winston-Salem, Jack Lee Masters Sr. of Clemmons, Carl Walter Masters Sr. of Florida and Mack Henry Masters of Kernersville; one sister; Virginia Babb of Kernersville; 28 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral Services were held Monday, December 15, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home, with the Rev. L. C. Taylor officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Gur Cemetery in Kernersville. Anyone wishing to assist the family may make memorials to Immanuel Baptist Church in care of Mr. Thomas Masters 1505 Lewisville-Clemmons Rd, Clemmons, NC 27012. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.

Edna Allen Long
A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands put to rest, by God’ s grace and mercy. Edna Allen Long, 86, died Friday, December 12, 2008. She was born June 30, 1922 in Davie County to Wesley Cleveland and Lola Riddle Allen. Edna was a member of Salem Baptist Church, was retired from AT&T Corp and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Payne Long, Sr. in 1972. Surviving to cherish her memory, are her two sons; Larry C. Long and wife Nancy of Yadkinville, Frank Long and wife Ann of Lewisville; a daughter; Becki Day and husband Burley Day, Jr. of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren; Laura Smith and husband Jeff, W. Matthew Long and wife Alissa; two great grandchildren; Colton Wesley Smith and Clinton Logan Smith; two step great grandchildren; Courtney Fine and Jeffery Fine; a half sister; Estelle Smith of Mocksville; a step sister; Elizabeth Teague of Clemmons and a sister in law; Nell Scott of Winston-Salem. A graveside service was conducted Sunday, December 14, 2008 at Westlawn Gardens of Memory, Clemmons, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salem Baptist Church, 429 S. Broad Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

Richard Earl McClure
Richard Earl McClure, 76, of Lewisville, died Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. McClure was born November 25, 1932 in Guilford County, a son of the late Herbert McClure and the late Mary Rose McClure. He was a veteran of the US Coast Guard and the owner and operator of M&M Pump and Tank Service. He was a very active member of Temple Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Allen Joyner; brothers, Herbert McClure, Jr., Carlyle McClure and J. Van McClure. Mr. McClure is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley Madren McClure, children, Susan Joyner and husband Gene, Wayne McClure and wife Lisa, Doug McClure, and Sandra McClure; sister, Polly Lindley; brother, Mickey McClure; grandchildren, Jessica McClure, Deana Joyner, and Malissa McClure. A funeral service was conducted Friday, December 12, 2008 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Bud Owen officiating. Interment followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. Rev. William C.
“Bill” Eicher
Rev. William C. “Bill” Eicher, 85, of Harrisonburg, VA, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at his home. Bill was born in Mt. Pleasant, PA on April 16, 1923, and was a son of the late Marion L. and Vernie Lillian (Shaffer) Eicher. Rev. Eicher was licensed in the Church of the Brethren in 1942, ordained in 1945, graduated from Manchester College in 1946, and Bethany Seminary in 1950. He pastored churches in Virginia (10), Ohio, and Pennsylvania. He was united in marriage on June 24, 1949 to Elsie Ruth (Williard) Eicher, of Harrisonburg, who survives. Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Linda Neff & husband John of Harrisonburg, VA; a son, David Eicher of Louisville, KY; four sisters, Pearl Beard, Ruby Lentz, Romayne Mueller, and Faye Dunn; three brothers, Millard Eicher, Wayne Eicher, and Clifford Eicher. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Melody Carol Neff and John Benjamin Neff. A funeral service will be held at the Fraternity Church of the Brethren, at 3:00 P.M. on Wednesday, December 17, 2008, with Rev. Robert Williard, Rev. John Neff, Rev. Mark Craddock and Rev. Ronald Wyrick officiating. Burial will follow at Fraternity Church of the Brethren Cemetery.
