Obituaries for Sept. 4, 2008

- Elsie L. Morris
Elsie L. Morris, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died Friday, August 29, 2008 at home after a lengthy battle with Non-Hodgkin’ s Lymphoma. She was born February 1, 1923, to the late Elsie Davenport and Clarence Jerome Liven-good, Sr. A native of Winston-Salem, she lived at Tanglewood, Winston-Salem, and for a few years in Atlanta, Ga. She was married first for 15 years to Murray Lybrook, who transformed Kate Bitting and William N. Reynolds’ Tanglewood Farm, into Tanglewood Park, until his untimely death in 1957, after which she raised their two daughters on her own. In 1971, she married Mack Morris, and they enjoyed 34 years together until his death in 2005. Elsie is survived by her daughters, Gail Lybrook and her husband, William David Hobbs, Jr., and Leesa Lybrook Goodson and her husband, Thomas O’ Kelley Goodson, of Winston-Salem; two grandsons, William Thomas Goodson and his wife, Allison, and David Lybrook Goodson; one step granddaughter, Angela Hobbs Dixon and her husband, Scott; and one step great granddaughter, Maggie Dixon. Elsie was the middle child of a large family of nine. She is survived by most of her family: her sisters Shirley L. Baker of Winston-Salem; and Alice L. Roberts (Lyle) of Tecumseh, Neb; her brothers Archer D. Livengood (Anne) of Mocksville; Stanley H. Livengood (Jean) of Charlotte; David L. Livengood (Margie) and Gerald W. Livengood (Carolyn) of High Point; and sister-in-law Carmel F. Livengood of Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by her brother, Clarence J. Livengood, Jr.; her sister, Patricia P. Livengood; and her brother-in-law, Raymond Baker. Her very special cousin, Ernestine Ray (Bill) of Archdale, also survives her, along with 25 Livengood, Lybrook and Roberts nieces and nephews and their families. After graduating from R. J. Reynolds High School, she worked for W. N. Reynolds and L. D. Long as their Executive Secretary for 10 years, until her first daughter Gail was born. Elsie embraced creativity throughout her life. Coming from a highly musical family, she enjoyed playing piano and loved to dance. She was an excellent seamstress, a gracious hostess and she passed her joy of cooking and entertaining on to her daughters, particularly her noted recipes for bread and butter pickles, caramel cake and chess tarts. Elsie was an active member of Knollwood Baptist Church, where she arranged the altar flowers every Sunday for many years. As a member of Westwood Garden Club, she entered her arrangements in the Dixie Classic Fair, always winning Blue Ribbons. Her acclaim as a flower designer was further acknowledged when she was invited to arrange flowers at Graylyn for First Lady Rosalynn Carter’ s visit to Winston-Salem. In addition to being a charter member and former President of Westwood Garden Club, Elsie was a member of the Amos Cottage Guild, Salem Home Circle, Friends of Brenner Children’ s Hospital, Friends of Ronald McDonald House, Special Children’ s School, Reynolda House, the Sorosis Book Club, Friends of Tanglewood Park, Knollwood Baptist Church and Old Town Club. Elsie enjoyed an active lifestyle as long as her health permitted. She bowled for the Community Service Bowling League for 40 years and golfed with the Ladies’ Golf Association at Old Town Club for 35 years. Funeral services were conducted on Monday, September 1, at Knollwood Baptist Church, preceded by graveside services at Forsyth Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Elsie L. Morris Fund at the Winston-Salem Foundation, 860 W. Fifth Street, Winston-Salem, N.C., 27101.

Rev. Otis C. Clampitt
Rev. Otis C. Clampitt, 84, died Thursday, August 28, 2008, at his home in Clemmons, following a lengthy illness. He was born March 4, 1924, in Macon County, the son of the late Rufus Richard and Hattie Cochran Clampitt. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Audrey Mae Brafford Clampitt. Rev. Clampitt was a veteran of World War II where he served as a Navy Corpsman attached to the Marine Corps and saw action in the South Pacific, Japan and China Theatres. He was a graduate of Piedmont Bible College where he taught for 18 years and served as a member of the college’ s board of directors. Rev. Clampitt was Pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church, Clemmons, for 40 years and later served as pastor of The West Bend Baptist Church, for 7 years, where he was active until his illness. He also was a member of The Pastor’ s Group in High Point and served as it’ s president. Rev. Clampitt also served on the Board of Directors. In addition to his wife, Audrey, Rev. Clampitt is survived by son, O. Clinton Clampitt, Jr. and wife Martha of Annapolis, MD; daughter, Vickie Clampitt Howard and son-in-law Dennis of Clemmons; son, Joel R. Clampitt and wife Tonia of Advance and son, Gaius G. Clampitt and wife Paula of Clemmons. Also surviving are grandchildren, Courtney Clampitt, Constance Clampitt Michael and husband Justin, Chris Clampitt, Hailey Clampitt, Brandon Combs and Trinity Combs. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, August 31, at the Hayworth-Miller Chapel with Rev. Warren Kerr, Rev. Elmer Day and Rev. Buddy Lowman officiating. Interment followed at The West Bend Baptist Church Cemetery on Shallowford Road. Memorial contributions may be made in honor of Rev. Iris S. Bridges
Iris S. Bridges passed away peacefully, Monday, September 1, 2008 at Piedmont Crossing in Thomasville, NC. Mrs. Bridges was born on October 19, 1923 in Davidson County, daughter of the late Margie and George Smith. She grew up in the Holly Grove area of Davidson County, attended Davis Townsend High School in Holly Grove, and Catawba College in Salisbury, NC. There she met her future husband of 52 years, Moses Bridges, Jr. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Brian in 1972 and by her beloved husband, Moses, in 1996. Having her education interrupted by World War II, Iris returned to Catawba in 1960 as a proud mother of four sons with a fifth on the way to graduate and then enter the teaching profession. Mrs. Bridges taught business classes in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School system until retiring in 1985. After fulfilling careers in education, Iris and Moses retired and moved to Bermuda Run, NC. She spent many of her retirement years vacationing with her husband in the mountains of North Carolina. Iris relocated to Piedmont Crossing in 1996 after the death of her husband. She was a former member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, Clemmons United Methodist Church in Clemmons and recently rejoined her childhood church, Emanuel Reformed Church in Thomasville, NC. Although Iris enjoyed teaching, her real love was raising five sons and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by those sons, Barton Bridges and wife, Billie of Tampa, FL, Keith Bridges and wife, Patti of Chapel Hill, NC, Alan Bridges and wife, Amy of Clemmons, NC, Frank Bridges and wife Susan of Weddington, NC and John Bridges of Greensboro, NC. She was the proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren and 4 great-granddaughters. Nothing in her life was more important to her than family. In celebration of her life, the family will receive friends at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington, NC one hour prior to the 11:00 am funeral service on Wednesday, September 3, 2008. Friends of Iris and her family are also invited to a burial service at 1:00 pm Wednesday at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons, NC. The services will be conducted by Reverend Rickey Payne. - Dr. William Charles Baldwin
On the morning of Sunday, August 10, 2008 Dr. William Charles Baldwin, known to some as “Bill” transitioned from this realm to be with God.
Born on November 12, 1928 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Leonard and Rhoda Baldwin, he spent much of his early years in an orphanage after the passing of his mother. Reunited with his father as a young man, Bill was reared in LaGrange (Chicago), Illinois by his father and stepmother, Pinkie L. Baldwin.
Know to his high school classmates as an All-State football hero, “Chuck” (as he was called at home) joined the workforce while in school and eventually enlisted in the United States Army.
While traveling on leave from the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, NC to Chicago, he met the love of his life, Anita B. Seegars, in Winston-Salem, NC. They married August 10, 1952 and almost one year later; this union was blessed with one daughter, Charnita Kay.
Elder Baldwin was primarily recognized as the Overseer of Sacred Hour Ministries, Inc. and Dove Ministries, both presently of Clemmons, NC. His life-long focus was the oversight and financial support of the legacy given to his wife.
After beginning a ministry in their in-home Bible Study in September 1974, together, the Baldwin’s saw the charge grow and prosper. They remained in the Washington, DC area until moving to the Winston-Salem vicinity in 1988 under an Abrahmic directive from God. Throughout their ministerial careers, the Baldwin’s watched many spiritual sons and daughters rise to their own places in God to become active ministers in the Body of Christ.
He leaves to grieve their temporary separation his loving and equally devoted wife, Anita; their daughter, Charnita Kay Baldwin; 7 grandchildren, William, II, Jason Hammiel, Latoya Williams, Y’Shica Blackwell, Chavey Baldwin, Alonzo Baldwin and Ashley Baldwin; 5 great-grandchildren, Destiny and Jalen Hammiel, Kamaria and Nicholas Williams, and Malik Charles Baldwin; a sister and nephew from Chicago, Keturah and Brennan Baldwin; a cousin, James Hammock; many other relatives, friends, and innumerable spiritual sons and daughters.
A funeral service of celebration will be held at 11am Saturday, August 23, 2008 from the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Michael Jones of Glory Church, Charlotte, NC officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 7pm until 9pm on Friday, August 22, 2008 at the Chapel.

Patricia Ann Sparkman
Patricia Ann Sparkman, 74, born December 4, 1933, loving mother of Kathleen Louise Adkinson of Clemmons, NC and Wesley Alan Sparkman of Birmingham, AL went home to see her Lord on Saturday, August 23, 2008. She is survived by her two children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in Ocala, Florida.

Don Hugh Craft Jr.
Don Hugh Craft, Jr., 46, passed away August 21, 2008. He was preceded in death by his father, Don Hugh Craft, Sr. and his grandparents. His immediate survivors are his mother, Levonda Craft of Lewisville; brother, David and his wife Jennifer of Yadkinville; his nephew, Dalton Craft; and numerous cousins and friends. He was a member of I.B.E.W. Local 342. A graveside service was conducted Monday at Lewisville United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Linda Mae Tuttle Brinegar
Mrs. Linda Mae Tuttle Brinegar, of Lewisville, went home to Jesus, her Lord and Savior Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born September 1st, in Forsyth County to Gorrell C. and Eddis Childers Tuttle. Linda was a member of Calvary Baptist Church since 1964. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother who was a testimony for serving others. Mrs. Brinegar was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Doris Ann May and Emma Ruth Church; four brothers, Dexter, Travis, Bruce and Richard Tuttle. Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Mr. Jerry D. Brinegar; one daughter, Mrs. Teri Brinegar Emerson (husband Byron) of Forbush; one son, Mr. Donnie Brinegar (wife Tanya) of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Meredith, Matthew, Alyssa and Alie; one sister, Sue Altman of Charlotte and one brother, Jimmy Tuttle of Fuquay-Varina. A Celebration of her life was conducted Saturday, August 23, 2008, at Calvary Baptist with Dr. Guy Hipp and Rev. Neil Tuttle officiating. Burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Ln., Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family wishes to thank Dr. Walter Wray and staff, Dr. Andrew Griffin, Dr. Judith Hopkins and Carol Holt and staff, Dr. Ishmael Goco and daughter, Dr. Lori Kellam and the 9th floor Oncology group at Forsyth Medical Center. Linda battled cancer for nine years, strengthened by her firm faith in Christ, the prayers of friends and the loving care of her family.

- Mohammad Vahid Sadat Nasseri
Mohammad Vahid Sadat Nasseri, 50, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008. He was born in Tehran, Iran, to Ghodsi Hamadi and Ahmad Sadat Nasseri. He was preceded in death by his father. He came to the U.S. in 1976 to continue his education. He was somewhat of a mathematical genius, making a perfect score on the SAT in math, when he barely knew the English language. He graduated with a B.S. in nuclear physics in 1982. He had a wonderful sense of humor and genuinely loved people. He was one who truly never met a stranger. He was formerly a member of Victory Baptist Church in Clemmons before starting his own ministry a few years ago. He was a spirit-filled believer who loved the Lord with all his heart, mind and soul. He was the owner of J&R Printers Inc. in Clemmons for over 23 years. He is survived by his wife of nearly 27 years, Sharon Vogt Nasseri; and two children, Monica (Stephen Watson) of Clemmons and Megan of the home; a very special grandson, Carter Monroe Watson, whom he loved more than life; his oldest sister, Azam (Ali, M.D.) Farahnakian of Bermuda Run; his nephew, Ali Reza Farahnakian; his niece, Lilly Farahnakian, both of New York; a special cousin, Faranak Gobaud of California; and other family members residing in Iran, including his mother, a brother and two other sisters. A memorial service was conducted Saturday, Aug. 9, at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel, with the Rev. Tracy Webb officiating. Robert Lester Wade
Mr. Robert Lester Wade, 85, of Clemmons left our presence to enter the presence of our Heavenly Father on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, from the W.G. “Bill” Hefner V.A. Medical Center in Salisbury. His life began on Feb. 15, 1923 in Huntington, W.Va., from a hard-working, faith-based, dedicated family that shaped his character. As a young man he joined the U.S. Army, was stationed in Hawaii and experienced the bombing of Pearl Harbor of World War II. He served proudly for 20 years while furthering his education and his rank. He retired, honorably as a CWO second class. From there he was employed with McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft Corp. for 17 years. During and after both of these times, he had several small business ventures. His last and final commitment was with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Department for 13 years before declining health forced him to stop. His vast love and devotion as a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, to God, his family and friends are cherished memories. His laughter and wit, his love of traveling, politics, sports, reading, music and fondness of good food complimented his essence. He will be truly missed by all. For all the medical professionals and personnel involved in the treatment and care of his health conditions for his aging body, we thank all of you very much. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry G. and Fannie M. Wade; a daughter, Diana Wade; a half brother, Harry G. Wade Jr.; half sisters Helen Copen and Irene Harbour of Huntington, W.Va.; a brother, John Wade of Huntington W.Va.; and a sister, Eva Hagaman of Naples, Fla. He is survived by his gracious, loving wife of 63 years, Mary E. Wade, 82, of Clemmons; and two sisters, Mary E. Griffith of Huntington, W.Va., and Pauline Sardis of Cincinnati, Ohio. He is also survived by daughters Mary Davis of Clemmons; Irene Miller of Texas; Donna Jones of California; and Deborah Dykeman of Florida; a son, Robert Wade II of Clemmons; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and 13 nieces and nephews and their children. The funeral service was conducted Sunday, Aug. 10, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with a graveside service following Monday, Aug. 11, at Salisbury National Cemetery. The Rev. Joe Heck will officiated.

Matthew Lee Carleton
Matthew Lee Carleton, 19, of Clemmons passed away unexpect-edly Friday, Aug. 8, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center. Matt was born Nov. 9, 1988, in Fairfax County, Va. He graduated from West Forsyth High School in 2007. Matt was active in baseball, cross country and swimming. He attended UNC-Wilmington and planned on entering the U.S. Coast Guard in October. Matt had a great love for the beach and water. He spent most of his summers as a swim coach and lifeguard. He loved teaching young swimmers. Matt was a gifted athlete and a genius working with computers. Preceding Matthew in death were his grandfathers, Louis Carleton and C.R. Melton Jr. He is survived by his parents, Richard and Wanda Carleton; and his brother Christopher, all of the home; maternal grandmother Bobbie Melton of Salisbury; paternal grandmother Luise Carleton of Winston-Salem; uncles Mike Carleton and wife Lori of Mount Holly; Dave Carleton and fiancee Angela Church of Clemmons; and Joey Melton and wife Jane of Salisbury; and cousins Laura and Dave Melton of Salisbury; Sara, Christopher and Gracie Carleton, all of Mount Holly; and Tanner Allen of Hickory. He also leaves behind special friends Ian Kelly, Joe Yeager, Josh Downs, Seth McVay and Mallory Sutton; and many, many others. A celebration of life service was conducted Aug. 11, at Lewisville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Keith Bingham and the Rev. Terry Matthews officiating. Memorials may be made in Matt’ s memory through Lewisville United Methodist Church, 6290 Shallowford Road, Lewisville, NC 27023.

Lucille Dugan Nichols
Mrs. Lucille Dugan Nichols, 86, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at the Palliative Care Unit at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born January 1, 1922 in Cook County, Illinois. Mrs. Nichols was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church and was Auxillary President of the VFW Post 9010 in Clemmons since 1977. She retired from Eckerd Pharmacy with 20 years of service. Preceding her in death was her husband, Lawrence Eugene Nichols and a son, Lary Strom. Surviving are her children, John Strom, Thomas Strom, Kathleen Causey, George Nichols, and Sherri Caldwell; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Jeanette Van Beek and a brother, John Dugan. A wake service was held Friday, August 8, 2008 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Father Conall McHugh officiating. Burial followed at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family would like to send special appreciation to all her friends and associates at the VFW.

Michael Glenn Wall
On Saturday morning, Aug. 9, 2008, Michael Glenn Wall, a beloved husband, father, son and dear friend, went to be with his Heavenly Father. After years of battling numerous illnesses, organ transplantation, and heart problems, God saw it fit to take His dear servant home. “He had fought the good fight and finished the race, all the while keeping the faith.” - 2 Timothy 4:7. Mike never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew him. His sense of humor, positive attitude and an unwavering faith in God kept him going for many years even when the odds of living were medically against him. Mike was born June 12, 1951, in Cleveland County. He attended Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte with a concentration in business. After working for many years in the shoe industry, Mike opened and ran his own company for another 16 years before moving from South Carolina to Clemmons in 2001. He was a member of Clemmons First Baptist Church where he was actively involved in various activities. He was preceded in death by both his paternal and maternal grandparents; and a loving aunt, Elizabeth Davis of Shelby. He is survived by his parents, Glenn and Kathryn Wall (Shelby); his loving and devoted wife, Denice Caudle Wall of the home; two sons and a stepson, Chadwick Wall (Folly Beach, S.C.); Matthew Wall (Rock Hill, S.C.); and Taylor Allen (of the home); a brother, Andy (Carol) Wall (Shelby); his mother-in-law, Betty Caudle (Elkin); a very special brother and sister-in-law, Alan (Deann) Anderson (Rockingham); a wonderful niece, Georgia Grace Anderson (Rockingham); four special godchildren from Winston-Salem, Raquel Dewan, Ashley Austin, Tyson Moorefield and Kameron Moorefield; and numerous other relatives and close friends. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Aug. 11, at Clemmons First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Robby Phillips officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Clemmons First Baptist Church music ministry or Clemmons First Baptist Church youth program. In addition, Mike’ s wishes would be for everyone to register to be an organ donor so that even in death, there is life.

- John Kenneth Bassett
John Kenneth (Jack) Bassett, 77, passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2008. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on January 23, 1931 to the late Joseph and Marcella Bassett. Mr. Bassett loved the game of Squash and will be missed by many players young and old that he coached and influenced over the years. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Richard Bassett. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Donna Webster Bassett, son, Mark Bassett and wife Patti of San Raphel, CA, three daughters, Carol Matune, Columbus, OH, Anne Koballa and husband, Dennis of Durham, NC, Jean Lucas of Omaha, NE and son, Paul Bassett of Greenville, NC, two brothers, James and William Bassett and one sister, Barbara McIver. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A funeral mass was conducted Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at Holy Family Catholic Church. Mr. Bassett’ s final resting place will be at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be to Leukemia Lymphoma Society, 5950 Fairview Rd., Ste. 250, Charlotte, NC 28210.

Dorothy B. “Dot” Thomas
Dorothy B. “Dot” Thomas, 93, of The Crest of Clemmons died Tuesday, July 29, 2008. She was born Jan. 25, 1915, to Calvin and Virginia Boyles. Dot retired from Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools after 37 years of teaching English, first at Mineral Springs, then at North Forsyth High School. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph P. Thomas. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Terry and Jenny Foust; John and Penny Thomas; and Steve and Ouida Hedgecock; and a daughter-in-law, Judy Thomas. Even though she was retired, “Maw-Maw” continued to share her knowledge of the English language and English literature with her grandchildren, Andy Fishel and wife Christy; Tasha Thomas; and Hannah and Will Hedgecock. She was also constantly amazed and entertained by her twin great-grandchildren, Jacob and Emma Fishel. A brother, Norman Boyles, also survives. At Maw-Maw’ s request, there will be no service. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’ s choice.

Hazel Delores Brooks
Hazel Delores Brooks, 60, of Clemmons, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 29, 2008. She is survived by her husband, William of the home; son William Brooks and his wife, Regina, of Winston-Salem; daughter Sharon Thomas and her husband, Andrew, of Belews Creek; her mother, Hazel Luke Hardigree of Athens, Ga.; her brothers, Lynn Hardigree, Tony Hardigree, Ray Hardigree and Henry Hardigree, all of Athens, Ga.; her sisters, Faye Hardigree and Martha Thomas of Athens, Ga.; and grandchildren Kirsten Brooks and Rachel Thomas. She was employed by GMAC for eight years. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and her crafts. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and friend, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. The funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at the chapel, with interment following at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. Memorials may be made in her memory to the Derrick L. Davis Forsyth Regional Cancer Center at Forsyth Medical Center.

Nancy Ernest Conrad
Mrs. Nancy Ernest Conrad, 78, of Winston-Salem passed Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Oct. 9, 1929, in Forsyth County to Grover Allen Ernest Sr. and Bertha Teague Ernest. Mrs. Conrad was a charter member of Parkway Baptist Church where she loved to serve God and enjoyed serving others. She loved to spend time with her family and friends traveling and cooking. She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers; and two sisters. Surviving are her husband of the home, Mr. Jack Conrad Sr.; a son, Jack Conrad Jr. (wife Angie) of Clemmons; a daughter, Tracey Pittman (husband Darren) of Fayetteville; a brother, Turner Ernest; a sister, Peggy Linville, both of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Ryan and Robyn Conrad; and all of her extended family. The funeral service was conducted Friday, Aug. 1, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Pastor Steve Clayton officiating. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 5005 LBJ Freeway, Suite 250, Dallas, TX 75244.
